The two main categories for ACRIN's scanner-specific qualification program are Brain Imaging and Body Imaging. Each main category has three qualification sub-categories: Quantitative Imaging, Dynamic Imaging, and Imaging with Blood Sampling. The required qualification will be determined for each clinical trial involving PET/CT imaging.
Quantitative Imaging is the most basic scanner qualification. Every ACRIN trial that includes PET/CT imaging will require this qualification at a minimum. This qualification's aim is to ensure that a scanner’s basic calibrations appear acceptable and clinical images acquired are of adequate quality for use in clinical trials. The Quantitative Imaging qualification requires a site to submit images of an 18F-filled uniform cylinder acquired using a site's standard clinical protocol. In addition, a site is required to submit two anonymized clinical test cases acquired using its standard protocols.
The Dynamic Imaging qualification is required for a scanner to be used in a trial that includes dynamic imaging. This qualification requires scanning a uniform cylinder (it can be the same cylinder used for the Quantitative Imaging qualification) using a dynamic protocol specified by ACRIN.
The Imaging with Blood Sampling qualification is required for a scanner to be used in a trial that involves correlating image data to blood sample data from a well-counter. This qualification requires scanning a uniform cylinder (it can be the same cylinder used for the Quantitative Imaging qualification) using a standard protocol and a well-counter to measure the counts in a standard volume removed from the cylinder after filling.
New: The Qualification Utility for the Imaging Core Laboratory (QUIC)
QUIC is a Web-based tool that provides an efficient means for managing the PET/CT scanner qualification process and communicating with the core lab staff. By registering for access to the QUIC Web site, site personnel can complete the online PET/CT qualification, upload images, track the review process, and receive timely updates. Information about a PET/CT scanner’s qualification expiration is also available to help sites plan ahead for requalification.
QUIC can be accessed via the link below:
