Members of the Experimental Imaging Sciences Committee (EISC) include individuals with expertise in clinical imaging, imaging instrumentation, imaging agent chemistry and pharmacy sciences, clinical oncology, radiotherapy including image-directed treatment, cancer biology, biomarkers, and cancer outcomes. Committee responsibilities include devising, implementing, and guiding early multicenter pilot studies of emerging imaging technologies. Working closely with the disease site committees, it matches appropriate novel imaging approaches to identified clinical/translational goals. EISC protocols focus on molecular imaging and molecular pathways underlying cancer pathogenesis, often testing imaging as a cancer biomarker. Technical emphasis is on validation of the experimental imaging data, development of standards for acquisition and analysis, and provision of preliminary data relating imaging results to cancer outcomes.
The EISC coordinates educational presentations by imaging and cancer biology experts at the ACRIN Annual Meeting. These presentations, which focus on new imaging approaches, emerging clinical approaches, and advances in basic science, are followed by brainstorming sessions aimed at generating new ideas for clinical trials and possible PIs to generate protocol concepts. Continued protocol development includes the following tasks:
- Identifying the clinical need served by the new imaging procedure
- Describing the scientific rationale for the approach
- Identifying ACRIN centers capable of performing the study
- Identifying technical needs, particularly imaging acquisition and analysis
- Identifying any regulatory issues/barriers
- Estimating subject numbers and costs
Technologies developed through the EISC are transferred to the appropriate Imaging Core Laboratory component, which supports their implementation in larger studies directed by disease site committees and/or collaborative cooperative groups.
